HENRIKES is a collaboration between vocalist and writer Henrikes and producer and writer Märta Grauers. With a new EP pencilled in for early 2021, the duo certainly has us interested in what’s to come when we heard Vintage Love.
Henrikes’ voice certainly takes pride of place on the track, as she navigates a path between the wistful electro-era sound of Susanne Sundfør and the more skillful pop-oriented aesthetic of Lykke Li or Anna of the North. That does give the song something of a sad banger vibe at times, moreso in the lyrics, but to their credit, the band eschews the easy route of the anthemic chorus to craft something intimate and engaging – and it is just as effective at getting under your skin.
Talking about the inspiration behind the lyrics to the track, the band says, “Vintage Love is the soundtrack of you having enough, driving away, feeling like Thelma and Louise. The song is about the breaking point when you realise you’ve been compromising yourself to fit into a given role, and an encouragement to question old-fashioned stereotypes that we have been reproducing for so long.”
