New Music: Jess Chalker – Don’t Fight It
Australian-born but now based in London in the UK, Jess Chalker gears up for the release of her Hemispheres album with the delicious retro-styled introspection of Don’t Fight It.
The singer-songwriter, who will be known to many for her work with We Are The Brave, channels some of that band’s New Wave energy on Don’t Fight It. Shades of post-punk and 80s AOR percolate through the moody veneer of the track, in a similar vein to Pat Benatar or Chrissie Hynde, framing her smoky vocals in a soothing and highly appealing pop/rock sound.
Shares Chalker about the track; “There’s a bittersweetness to Don’t Fight It that I love… it feels both joyful and sad to me. It was written at a time when I was going through some personal stuff, trying really hard to please everyone, not really knowing where I fit and becoming someone I wasn’t. In the end I really surrendered to that feeling of being lost, because acknowledging that made me realise I needed to change where I was going.”
You can pre-order a 12-inch limited edition translucent purple vinyl version of Hemispheres over on Jess Chalker’s Bandcamp page. The album is due out on the 5th of November.
