Originally from Peterborough, Ontario, and now based in St. John’s Newfoundland, Kelly McMichael’s new single sees her singing of memories from a much bigger city. You can listen to Montreal below.

The Canadian singer-songwriter has a voice and style that seem timeless. What stands out is her vocal performance – pitched somewhere between the 70s mysticism of Stevie Nicks and the folkish clarity of Phoebe Bridgers, grounded even as the lyrics take an escapist, wistful turn. Backed by an Americana-infused arrangement that is purposefully understated but constantly changing, there’s something new to discover in the song with every listen.

Speaking about the lyrics, she says, “I’m reflecting on free, silly, irresponsible frolickings of a road trip long ago. An acceptance of years gone by and satisfaction with the memories made. A celebration of friendship and youth.”
