New Music: Knife Girl – Fantasies

Fantasies is part of a musical journey that has seen Helsinki-based Knife Girl expand her sound from indie rock and bedroom pop to focus on electronica that is bright, sexual, and fun.

You’re certain to hear Fantasies played in the better queer underground clubs in the coming months, though it deserves as wide an audience as possible for its glitchy, bouncy sound.

And what a sound! Think SOPHIE and A. G. Cook as its glossy, neon-lit, production smooths together some frenetic chops and changes in sound and tempo. But there’s also a high-energy hedonism that feels part-inspired by the New York ballroom scene, overtly sexual and sensual, and very, very fierce.

Says Knife Girl, aka musician and producer Lili Aslo, “Fantasies is a song I started making as something dumb and fun that my (gay) friends could dance to at the club. Like most of the songs from my 2023 album CUM, it’s very influenced by SOPHIE. This is also one of the first times I’m not producing entirely by myself, as this was co-produced by the lovely Danielle Beatrice and Tareq Tryti.”

The track also sees Knife Girl moving on musically, as well as comprising part of her upcoming CUM 2 album. “CUM 2 is the afterglow to the intensity of my 2023 album, CUM.” reveals Aslo. “It consists of unreleased tracks that didn’t land on the original CUM, some remixes, a cover, and a ‘stripped’ version. CUM 2 is my way of closing the CUM chapter of Knife Girl.”
