New Music: Marva Von Theo – Where She Belongs

The adventurous pop of Where She Belongs sees Marva Von Theo deliver another tantalising sneak peek into their new LP, We Were Never Lost.

Marva Von Theo is actually an Athens-based duo, Marva Voulgari and Theo Foinidis, who since their foundation have created music that lives within a pop setting, while finding differing routes by which to bring classical and electronic themes into the fold.

They’ve described the song – the third single so far, from the album – as “a love that arrives unexpectedly and takes root so deeply that it unsettles the certainties by which a person had learned to define themselves.

Voulgari’s vocals possess a smoky quality, one that could find a home in jazz or soul, yet is equally at home with the broad swathes of cinematic strings and a house-referencing bass line that help to define the emotional terrain of Where She Belongs. She has a natural and organic sounding range and tone that invites comparisons to Marina and Florence: individualistic and confident, as the lyrics take the listener through a sudden realisation that in turn becomes a revelation.

Voulgari and Foinidis keep a pop aesthetic at the centre of the song; the strings and vocals set the mood, but the melody romances the listener too, a passionate moment told with grace and love.

The track is accompanied by a handcrafted lyric video in which a fragmented portrait is gradually assembled into a collage of identity. It’s a visually striking piece that works as a metaphor for the pieces of the self finally finding their place, as a woman’s unexpected love for another woman turns into a story of transformation, self-discovery and belonging.
