New Music: Memoryy – INTIMACYA L8R

The clever title – it took me a few seconds to get there – isn’t the only thing about the new single from Memorry that’ll put a smile on your face.

Memoryy, the project of Albuquerque, New Mexico, musician and producer Shaun Hettinger, wraps a serious message in a delightfully summery pop sound. He notes that the subliminally dark electropop era of New Order influences the track, and the vocals and guitar at times run parallel with the funked-up pop of Prince at his most flirtatious. The lyrics talk of therapy, however, as we are taken on a journey of rediscovering and reinventing the self after a time of significant personal challenges and change.

Add in a liberal sprinkling of leftfield Scandipop – ViVii, Xenturion Prime, and Robyn – and Hettinger hints a perfect happy/sad balance. You might laugh or cry, maybe both, as the lyrics get your neurones firing, but you’ll want to hear them again and again – like all the best pop songs.

Hettinger was this to say about the song, which will appear on his EXIT INTERVIEW album, “INTIMACYA L8R is about all the strange ways you change after a breakup – new hair, tattoos, pierced ears, late-night YouTube tarot – while still looking backward and trying to make sense of the relationship. It’s reflective without wallowing in it; the humor is mostly aimed at myself.”

For news on EXIT INTERVIEW and Shaun Hettinger’s work as Memoryy and making music for TV and film, head to Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook. INTIMACYA L8R can be downloaded on Bandcamp as part of a double-single with Cold Hands.
