New Music: Molly Mogul – Run

Already known for her role in co-founding Dirty Spread Collective, now Molly Mogul demonstrates her solo chops on Run.

With a background in performance and a creative journey that has taken her to Berlin, Barcelona, and Bristol, Run is as much an artwork as a piece of music.

Switching from German to English lyrics and back, and a spoken-word guest vocal in French, Mogul is attuned to the idea that the sound of words and how they are spoken are as important as their literal meanings.

And when paired with the airy, versatile vocals of Mogul herself – hard as flint or soft as silk as and when Run requires – the emotional intensity is ramped up ever higher. That feeds into the electronic arrangement, with dub and downtempo expressing complex themes in an experimental, clubby style that fans of Björk, Bat for Lashes, and Fever Ray will love.

Talking about the background to Run, Mogul says, “One of the first demos written on my own out of my camper van in Bristol, the song is a reminder that you can’t outrun your fears, and eventually the things you don’t look at will catch up on you. Whether it’s in relationship to yourself or others. Whether it’s in relationship to yourself or another, at the end what’s left is yourself.”
