New Music: My Twisted Heart – Heartbreaker

Hong Kong/Cork musician My Twisted Heart (AKA MT Heart) is part of the Outsiders collective along with Outsider YP and Kestine. The artist knows how to bring something new and vital to the already expansive hyperpop genre, if new single Heartbreaker is anything to go by.

The track features on the Heart Leak EP, which is out on January 14^th and is a blitzkrieg bop of bubblegum sounds and raw emotion. In common with much of the music labelled as hyperpop, Heartbreaker is a bewildering array of loops, beats and influences – J-Pop and K-Pop mainly, though EDM and rock certainly come through in the flow of the track.

There’s an emphasis on the lyrics and melody as well, their actual meaning, rather than relying on the sound of the song itself to communicate emotion, that confidently sets Heartbreaker apart from much of the genre.

Says the artist about the track, “Heartbreaker is a song about fear. The fear of tearing apart something with great potential. The fear of not being good enough for someone but still wanting to be with them despite it all. It’s also a warning message to the person you may like. But there is thrill in the fear and anxiety of it all. Sometimes it’s overwhelming. Heartbreaker embodies this feeling.”
