New Music: Natalie McCool – Devils

The lockdown hasn’t stopped British artist Natalie McCool from being creative. While a tour and SXSW slot didn’t happen, her podcast and preparations for a new album have kept her busy. Devils shows it has been a fruitful time for her.

Co-written with Daniel Haggis of The Wombats, the song has an effervescent very indie-pop energy to it, but McCool takes that in some unexpected directions. The smooth, smouldering tones of Pale Waves or Desperate Journalist echo through the song, emotions very much to the fore. Added to that, a nod to the classic Buckingham/Nicks era ‘heartache rock’ of Fleetwood Mac makes its presence known in the rainy day spirit of the vocals and guitar melody.

Says McCool about the song, “Devils is essentially about allowing yourself every once in a while to give into emotions that are traditionally seen as negative, and that’s okay, because we are only human and need to experience and accept these feelings to be whole.”

She goes on to add, “I think giving someone the space and support to say anything and everything they are experiencing or thinking, and for that also to be ok, is an amazing way to accept and move on. In a way it’s taking away the stigma and shame of these feelings and turning the experience into something positive that will make you stronger.”
