New Music: dayaway – true cyan

The summer days in Queens must be something special indeed, if they can help conjuror up the wistful sounds of true cyan by indie duo dayaway.

The song, which will feature on their ghost beach EP, is a moody yet upbeat take on dreampop and shoegaze, as a lushly appointed arrangement is delicately draped with honeyed leads vocals and hook-heavy backing vocals.

The lyrics, however, do draw you back to a guarded and grounded reality, but it’s all done so gently that you almost don’t feel the pain. The unsparing lyrics and warm tones of true cyan will appeal to fans of Tennis, Royel Otis, and Beach Fossils.

Says dayaway vocalist Amber Renee about the track, “true cyan is a deceptively sad song. It’s about feeling invisible or unknowable. Like the kind of loneliness that makes you feel alone in a crowded room. I was inspired to write it after seeing this cool visual phenomenon that mimics true cyan.”

“Apparently cyan can’t be reproduced digitally, which means you can only see it out in nature. But if you stare at a red circle for long enough, when you close your eyes, you can see the ghost of it. I wanted to write a song about that. It’s about the loneliness of existing in the digital world. Nothing is real. It’s all just an optical illusion.”
