New Music: New Spell – Uncertain Answer

New Spell is fronted by San Francisco singer-songwriter Leanne Kelly. She’s joined along the way by regular collaborators Max Savage and Jacob Frautschi on her mission to create lush, shining pop with a twist, such as on new single Uncertain Answer.

Hard to define but very easy to enjoy, Uncertain Answer is pop with one foot firmly placed in darker musical genres. Of particular note is Kelly’s Alison Goldfrapp style vocal performance, full of passion yet and at times almost removed from the musical tempest that surrounds it.

Kelly cites Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, and Chromatics as influences on the track, and you can hear that in the bright, leftfield pop tones. However, trip-hop and dreampop also come into play, adding a hard edge in keeping with the lyrics focus on climate change, as well as adding an air of vitality and vibrancy.
