New Music: OLI – Cry

London-based musician OLI says she remembers writing her first song aged 7. That early start and formative influences such as Sade and Dionne Warwick may provide a clue to the mature, confident sound of Cry; co-written and produced by Benny D.

Like a soundtrack for moments spent alone in late night bars, Cry has an introspective, wistful feel to it. Smoky jazz meets lyrics that are emotionally open yet confident, capturing a sense that while vulnerability and being alone may seem like weakness to others, they can ultimately be a source of strength.

OLI says about the inspiration behind the song’s moving lyrics, “I specifically wanted Cry to focus on that numb feeling, when you’re unable to even process your emotions and let them go. The constant back and forth of knowing something isn’t right inside but wanting to keep going and not seem weak. I’ve always felt crying in general is underappreciated.

The second half of the song is describing how good you feel after. How things really can become clearer in your head if you allow yourself to let it out and stop judging yourself for it.”
