New Music: Pearly Drops – Breathless
Some artists seem to eschew any compromise with overt commerciality yet still retain a sound that is accessible and engaging. That’s certainly something that can be said to Finland’s Pearly Drops and their new track, Breathless.
Sandra Tervonen and Juuso Malin, based in Helsinki, take elements of post-punk, electro, and neon Goth to create a song that sits well sonically next to the likes of Grimes, but also Drab Majesty; dreamy yet with an unflinchingly dazzling brightness to it. There’s an inherent contradiction in there, for sure. But that ability to straddle two very different and opposing genres, and to do so with such panache and passion, is what gives the song its strength and beauty.
