New Music: Picture Postcard – wherever you’re meant to be

If you’re from Dublin and drawing from shoegaze for large elements of your sound, then some obvious comparisons will be made.

With wherever you’re meant to be, Picture Postcard easily shrug off any comparisons to My Bloody Valentine by navigating a route of their own. Shoegaze is but a starting point here, often coming through in the shimmer of the guitars, but even then, there’s a squalling, shearing quality you don’t often associate with the genre.

The band has been labelled ‘dreamo,’ and while the track does have a drive in the melody and backing vocals that is reminiscent of emo, its fuzzed-out guitars layer the hardcore side of that genre on the surface. In fact, I’m not quite sure what genre, if any, I’d place the song in, and from that sense of confoundment comes some of the listening pleasure you’ll gain if you open your mind to what the band is doing here.
