New Music: Rookes – New Lovers

London-based Rookes has used some of her own experiences of synaesthesia in collaboration with graphic designer Matt Gelder to create a uniquely beautiful video for her track New Lovers.  Check it out below.

Rookes’ voice has an uncanny resemblance to Annie Lennox and Christine McVie. Possessing a similar way of rolling and caressing a word or phrase, she teases out the meanings behind the words, creating a bond them and the listener. Hints of classic 80s synthpop surface in the arrangement at times, but New Lovers is not an empty pop song. In fact, it has a maturity and sophistication that sets it apart from the retro-electro pack.

Rookes had this to say about the track: “New Lovers expresses the tension and thrill of sleeping with someone for the first time in the early stages of a new relationship. The song explores the expectations and potential of first exploring that physical connection, not just in terms of pleasure but what that first intimate encounter signifies in the larger picture of both partner’s romantic histories.”
