New Music: Ruthie – No One On This Earth (feat. Drenge)
With her Universal Heartbreak Now EP due for release on November 22nd, Ruthie has dropped a great slice of classic pop to whet our appetites. And to spoil us even more, it also features Eoin from Drenge on vocals!
One thing that leaps out for me is Ruthie’s vocal similarity to the legendary Kirsty MacColl, as she takes a folk-infused delivery and styles it into a wry, rock-friendly sound. Though there’s also an echo of the work of Father John Misty in the mellow undercurrent to the melody, whilst the duetting with Eoin from Drenge inspires favourable comparisons with MacColl’s famous collaboration with The Pogues. It’s a perfect song for Christmas, but one you can share with friends or a lover all year round.
Ruthie had this to say about the track: “There are so many songs about being in love, and so many songs about when love goes wrong. This song is about the slow dawning realisation that you are no longer in love, no longer heartbroken, no longer in mourning. It’s a duet between two people who used to speak with one voice but became strangers. I didn’t write the second part with anyone particular in mind to sing it, but Eoin’s voice fits the song perfectly. He was a joy to work with and spend time with!”
No One On This Earth is out now and can be streamed or downloaded on all major platforms – click here to find out more. Head over to her Facebook, Instagram or Twitter socials for information on the song, upcoming live dates including 30th November at The Brudenell.
