New Music: RXRXBBIT – notmyproblem

Based in Los Angeles, artist, songwriter, and producer RXRXBBIT deals with a sensitive issue in a forthright, incisive, and thoughtful manner.

Within the lyrics of notmyproblem, RXRXBBIT looks at the relationship between someone in the throes of actions that may lead to their own harm. Here, she places them within the wider context of those not occurring in isolation.

The title is a bit of a misdirect: RXRXBBIT is wanting us to examine ‘our’ role in something that we may want to dismiss or ignore. Not something you expect to hear in a song; I can imagine some might find it uncomfortable, as it covers tricky territory around relationships and mental health. It’s not a lecture or a series of accusations, nor is it excusing anyone of blame. RXRXBBIT pulls back the curtain on something that is often misunderstood, a valuable endeavour.

However, without a suitable vehicle, that point wouldn’t be made effectively. With notmyproblem, we get a gothic pop number that is wound around a dark wave spine, highlighting but not mimicking the cognitive dissonance that the lyrics uncover. The chorus is spine-tingling and catchy, the melody fast and furious, the rush of emotions in the lyrics having the perfect counterpart.

“I wanted to explore what it means to be the mechanism through which someone engages in self-destructive behavior,” says RXRXBBIT. “You can be genuinely harmed by what someone is doing and still be participating in it. You can see yourself as the victim, recognize your contribution to the cycle, and somehow still convince yourself that it isn’t your problem.”

“Listeners should interpret the relationship portrayed in this song in whatever way it may apply to them or how they relate to it,” she adds.
