New Music: Slowdive – alife

What were the odds that back in the dog days of 1995, Slowdive would become one of the most important influences in 2023’s sonic landscape. The everything is alive album and tracks like alife sound familiar because the band’s sound redefined rock and indie not just back then, but in the following years and decades.

While much of the media positions the album in terms of a comeback or a revival, this is a band that has remained a constant presence in musical circles. Even when dismissed as a band, their music lived on and has deservedly grown in stature and respect in recent years.

“As a band, when we’re all happy with it, that tends to be the stronger material,” Halstead says. “We’ve always come from slightly different directions, and the best bits are where we all meet in the middle.”

“Slowdive is very much the sum of its parts,” adds Rachel Goswell. “Something unquantifiable happens when the five of us come together in a room.”

Vinyl copies of everything is alive, which is out now via Dead Oceans, can be picked up on Bandcamp. For other listening options, plus details of upcoming European and worldwide live dates, check out the band’s Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram channels.
