New Music: Supermilk – Sweat

North London indie-rock outfit Supermilk herald their upcoming tour and album by dropping the blistering, jagged juggernaut that is Sweat. The song is a great taster for the High Precision Ghosts long player – check it out.

This is a track that is chock full of indie-punk swagger, though the time signatures and reflective lyrics point at something more substantial and thoughtful underpinning all that. Vocally I can hear a lot of Andy Partridge, and that XTC sound bubbles through in the rhythm and tone of the fizzing, fiery arrangement. If this sounds as good live as it does in digital format, then the tour is gonna rock!

The track comes in the wake of Popyura being diagnosed with motor neuron disease earlier this year. “[I’m] determined to crack on and not take anything for granted,” he says. “We have shows lined up and you bet your able-bodied ass we’ll be ploughing ahead with those plans, even if I have to sit down for all of it.”

It has given Popyura an even greater sense of purpose:  “I’ve never wanted there to be too much of a lull in activity with any band I play in,” reveals the bassist and lead vocalist, “And I’ve always liked it when things move at pace. But following my diagnosis, making music that I love with people I love feels more important than ever, and I want to make sure not a second is wasted.”

He adds about the literal or metaphorical nature of the track itself, “In reality, [it’s] just a highly relatable song about getting sweat in your eyes, because God knows we’ve all been there.”

High Precision Ghosts is up for pre-order via Specialist Subject Records on Bandcamp in digital and vinyl formats. Supermilk play Oxford, Sunderland, London, Margate and Manchester this June in the leadup to the album’s release.
