The Cowls are led by primary songwriter and vocalist Damion Jurrens, who is joined by his brother Grady (formerly of Takka Takka and Nuh Uh) and Tyler Sargent (formerly of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah). Their sound has a novel twist, with modern indie and electronica being viewed through an 80s skewed prism, such as on the warm and delightful Shake This which comes from the EP of the same name.
With subtle hints of Hot Chip, Interpol and some modern lo fi nuances in the mix, the band apply an early UK indie filter to those sounds, the light but tight guitar blending with some retro-infused synthetic percussion and understated vocals.
Think Orange Juice meets New Order in a Brooklyn loft in 2018 and you get a flavour of where The Cowls are coming from.
It’s a theme that continues throughout the four track EP, as the tracks take melody, modernity and melancholy and come up with something timeless and fresh.
