New Music: Tribe Friday – Mammals

Swedish indie outfit Tribe Friday flip the Pixies script on the rollercoaster ride that is Mammals.

Running with a quiet-loud-quiet aesthetic, the song from their just-released The Band Formerly Known As Tribe Friday EP is often rather winsome and occasionally baroque. It’s not long, however, before they suddenly take the listener unawares, taking us along as they descend into an emo-meets-grunge maelstrom.

Even when the band repeats that, you’re still jolted out of the reverie they once again create within the arrangement. It’s a shock to the system, one that doesn’t lessen with repeated listens, fitting for a track that was inspired by the sweaty energy of moshpits and house shows in Austin, Texas.

Mammals could be viewed as a bit of an outlier on the EP’s often shoegaze and indie/emo sonic themes but gives the band – and us – the chance to appreciate their range and charisma.
