New Music: The Mounts – Runaway Girl

There’s a knack to pulling off a classic rock sound without sounding dated, and on Runaway Girl, Hull’s The Mounts prove they have the chops to do that. While the band cites Oasis and Arctic Monkeys as influences, the soul of the 70s breathes through every note of Runaway Girl.

There’s a dash of punk and No Wave for sure, especially in the swagger of the guitar and frenetic drumming. The vocals wouldn’t be amiss on a Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin album, the lyrics born of authentic working-class experience.

Says The Mounts’ lead vocalist Kieran, “Runaway Girl attempts to spark up a conversation about the value of taking life as it comes and trusting the thoughts and feeling inside yourself, even though that leaves you vulnerable to rejection and facing things alone,”

Runaway Girl is out now via Warren Records, a label run by the Warren Youth Project in Hull. The label was set up on the back of their appearance on Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire programme.
