New Music: Aubrey Haddard – Got Yours

I was initially blindsided and then intrigued by Got Yours, an early taste of Aubrey Haddard’s new album Drift Theory.

While she has referred to the very different sounds of PJ Harvey and LCD Soundsystem as potential influences, that surprising combination begins to make sense once you wrap your ears around Got Yours.

Indie and alt rock leave wispy shadows over a sparse, warm electronic soundscape, with the two sometimes meeting in a space that, thanks to her vocals, got me thinking of PJ Harvey for sure and, equally, the easy pop-led authority of Marina. Does that make sense when written down? Possibly not, which is why it’s a track that really needs to be heard, and often.

Haddard describes Drift Theory, which is out on the 2nd of October, as “a collection of songs exploring what happens when the stories we tell ourselves begin to unravel.”

“I started this work a few years ago while mindlessly floating through a mental health crisis. Music was and always remains a leg to stand on when I need it. I finished it this year with my best friend Joshua Pleeter, who can quite literally do anything.”
