New Music: Surf Harp – Willowing

The imminent release of Language is Lost, the new album from Surf Harp, sees them drop another inventive and enjoyable visualiser for a featured track. Check out the retro stylings of Willowing below.

The song has a wonderfully idiosyncratic ambience to it, but remains engaging and accessible. Think Of Montreal jamming with Talk Talk or XTC, then you’ll get a feel for Willowing. The lyrics and vocals especially invite comparisons with Andy Partridge and Kevin Barnes respectively, taking the listener on an amazing sonic journey through adventurous leftfield indie-pop.

The accompanying video for Willowing features the group’s principal songwriters Phil Bolton and Jeff Koplovitz being transported into a Japanese Panasonic Word Processor and converted into ascii, where the band says they “sing from within a digital wasteland and lament the fragmentation of perspective imposed by modern technology.”

Language is Lost comes out on the 25th of August via Shiny Boy Press and is currently up for pre-order in digital, cassette, and vinyl editions over on Bandcamp. For further listening options for Willowing and pre-save options for the LP, head over to the band’s Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok socials.
