New Music: &Tilly – Thieves

Music can be about self-expression and self-discovery, two themes that come through in the cinematic yet intimate moods and textures of Thieves, the latest single from &Tilly.

The strings and vocals set the listener up for something that is insightful and drenched with emotion, and Thieves does not disappoint. Built on trip-hop rhythms but more in tune with the world music meets meditative sounds of Dead Can Dance, the track is perfect for your own private moments of reflection.

Says the artist, “Thieves… is a contemplation of the mistakes we make in life and a realization it’s just us who are, in the end, responsible. Growing old, disappointed, and frustrated… we may have become what we blamed others for being: the thieves of our own happiness and often the ones that hurt others, too.”

“For the music video, we used footage from the (gorgeous) Washington, DC Metro. It serves as an analogy for ‘trying to get on the train,’ to try to get on the right track with your life, yet unsure if you should board, or if you even can (thus, ‘stealing’ the life you could have by the constant doubting).”

“The ending depicts a state of letting go, boarding, traveling, and leaving the underground, hopefully to start over. But you never know – it could mean something totally different to you, as that is how life is. There is no objective view, only your understanding of what you see in your own context.”
