New Music: Van Veen – Psychic Lunch

Van Veen gets us ready for the release of their Imitation EP on Deep to Left by dropping the sensual and dirty electroclash of Psychic Lunch.

Headed by Jared Hiller, previously of acclaimed neo-kraut outfit Operator Music Band, gives us something very different from that band’s eclectic and eccentric take on that genre. It’s not fully left behind, though. Psychic Lunch may head to the dark and smoky end of the dance floor, but Hiller keeps their sideways take on vocals and melody.

Those stripped-down nature of the techno flourishes could easily be from 80s Detroit, sweaty and sexual. The vocals, meanwhile, have a deadpan insouciance and knowingness to them; it makes you suspect that the track might be a manifesto for clubbing, it could easily be a template for your own seduction. At times there’s little to separate the two, and I suspect Hiller knows that.
