New Music: Matching Outfits – Mini Moon

On their latest single, Berlin-based Matching Outfits find an unexpected intersection between Marquee Moon and the heyday of C86.

The track, which is out now as a part of a double-single along with Leave It, has a guitar line that invites positive comparisons to a song that is pivotal part of the modern American musical folklore. A laconic hook and wistful guitar melody complement the possibly satirical lyrics, a noticeable counterpoint to the sugar-sweet harmonies and the summery jangle that defines much of Mini Moon.

There is heartache in the lyrics, but not bitterness; are they world-weary when it comes to relationships? Well, I don’t want to throw out spoilers about the lyrics, other than to say that when you first hear the chorus, you’ll most likely laugh in shock and maybe even self-recognition.

“I wrote Mini Moon in the fall of 2024, after we toured with (and adored) Slipper,” says Matching Outfits vocalist Linnea. “We had heard there was a mini moon visible in the sky, and went out on a late-night walk searching for it. During this time, I was both worried sick about my ex, and frustrated with the unsuccessful search of a new muse. Maybe this new moon indicated a turning point?”
