New Music: Shook – Ultra Magnetic

Minimal proto-techno beats rush headlong into shadows of the Sheffield punk-funk of Chakk and Cabaret Voltaire on Ultra Magnetic.

Shook, the Dutch producer Jasper Wijnands, incorporates this into a glossy frenzy of electro-funk, one he describes as ‘space rock funk’, as he teases out the sensual side of primitive percussion and broad, phased swathes of synths.

Wijnands has said his music is inspired by “timeless forces such as love, change, and art,” but there’s a lot of fun to be with Ultra Magnetic, which is from his upcoming sci-fi concept album Arcana.

Maybe you can additionally pick up a bit of Daft Punk and Yellow Magic Orchestra in the way the track builds on its skeletal foundations to become a retro-futurist club banger. He does that on vintage analogue equipment, such as the LinnDrum, Simmons, and Vermona DRM1, adding extra classic touches to the sheer pleasure of a track that is a brilliant calling card for the album.
