New Music: Flat Party – Shotgun

London-based sextet Flat Party show that the devil really is in the detail as they regale us with the deadly and deliciously sinful tones of Shotgun.

Hell may be other people, so it stands to reason that it could be bands – or nations – as well. Vocalist Jack Lawther almost croons at the start of the track, but as the song becomes ever more frenetic – and the lyrics more stark and honest – he becomes raw and uncompromising.

The band are on fine form, the song descending level after level from lush art-indie to tongue in cheek pop, before ending somewhere fiercer and fierier. You don’t have to be vain to hope this song isn’t about you.

Says Lawther, “Shotgun is an ode to hedonism, but it’s also full of self-loathing and anxiety. There’s a lyric in there based on a quote I read that was ‘The sun never sets on the British Empire, because even God couldn’t trust the English in the dark,’ I thought that was brilliant.”

“Musically, it’s a bit of a piss-take to be honest. I wrote it very quickly as a bit of a jab at the sea of cowbell-punk-bands that were impossible to escape at one point. A fair few people have told me after gigs that this is their favourite song and I think ‘of course it is, I wrote it for YOU’.”
