New Music: The Sonic Trees – The story begins where she begins

Ahead of their MIDLIFE:CRISIS album, Berliners The Sonic Trees treat us to another song from the release, the poignant The story begins where she begins.

With an arrangement that reminds me of an indie / post-punk take on The Cure circa Disintegration, the track has an air of melancholy about it that belies the positive nature of the lyrics.

Maybe that’s because even though the story at the core of the song marks an ending of sorts, and also a sign of potentially more trials to come – but the ultimate message of taking the risk to be yourself, be free, is a positive one.

The band described the lyrics as being “an empowering narrative about breaking free from societal expectations. It follows a woman reclaiming her story by choosing freedom over conformity.”

They add about the album, “MIDLIFE:CRISIS is a poetic meditation on regret, reinvention, and quiet resilience. It’s the sound of Berlin nights, East German longing, and the search for truth in an over-staged world.”
