New Music: Ulmenthal – Permanently Blue

On Permanently Blue, Ulmenthal – the new project from Estonia’s Eeva Trei – explores unexpected common ground between Cocteau Twins and late-night electronica.

The final track on her All My Dreams EP, it allows Trei and Ulmenthal to explore the ethereal reaches of her vocals, flying through gossamer clouds to the heavens that lie beyond.

Overlaid onto an arrangement where the synths and arps shimmer like the summer sun on a gently lapping ocean, Trei offers up Permanently Blue to the listener as mood music with a mesmerising quality. Trei has referred to the sound of Ulmenthal as ‘Hypno Pop,’ and I get what she means.

In fact, from the first notes of opening track Danced All Night to the last seconds of Permanently Blue, even the most upbeat moments on the EP have a soothing, escapist and futurist ambience in the style of Ionnalee and KÅRP that is a pleasure to lose yourself in.
