New Music: LAPÊCHE – Double Knotted

It’s nice to be wrong-footed at times, when a song like Double Knotted goes somewhere you don’t expect and brings you willingly along with it.

The initial notes and textures of the song have tension to them that borders on indie rock and dark wave, but that mix of fire and froideur quickly fades away. In its place, Brooklyn’s LAPÊCHE hit on a muscular percussion, and a guitar melody that can be as sweet as honey or as sharp as a buzzsaw.

It’s far from being dissonant, thanks to the blending of 90s indie and elements of shoegaze that keep the shimmer to the fore, declining to let it to get buried in noise, as if exploring boundaries, self-contained but always searching for equilibrium.

The vocals of Krista Holly Diem focus on quality that beautifully, as well as providing the song with an assured emotional centre, her voice having the angelic joy of Elisabeth Fraser and the sharp rock sensibility of Dolores Riordan.

States Diem about the track, “Double Knotted is about grounding yourself in the midst of chaos, finding balance amid uncertainty and motion. It’s not about achieving perfection or gaining control, it’s about persistence and presence.”
