New Music: Jaguar Glass – Marionette

Atlanta, Georgia, quartet Jaguar Glass have a unique and exciting approach to shoegaze-influenced rock, as can be heard on Marionette.

The rhythm section of Marionette is heavier than you expect from a song that comes from a shoegaze direction – the lead guitar also forays into a harder, even harsher milieu at points.

Countering that is the vocal performance of Sophia Trautman; ethereal for the most part, but at times, she also brings in the briefest moments of angst and hesitancy, as if reacting to the emotive force of the lyrics. The synths, in turn, veer into a string-like ambience, adding to the uncertain daydream/nightmare conflict within the track.

“[Marionette] explores a surreal, ominous narrative centered on a girl named Mary who is incapable of touching the ground,” says the band.

They continue, “Held aloft by the strings of her own anxiety, she experiences a haunting sense of levitation, only to realize that she is the one inadvertently creating this floating state of dread.
