New Music: Dennis Beach – Platino

Platino is the debut single from Dennis Beach as well as an enticing early insight to their upcoming EP, The Cannibal Canteen.

The Manchester-based quintet do dip into the city’s music history at times, but where they go and where they take the listener are somewhat outside what we might expect, given the sounds that currently dominate its indie scene.

Dennis Beach are regular performers at the legendary Akoustik Anarkhy music nights, and you can tell why they keep getting invited back. Though it is blessed with vocals and lyrics that could easily be passed off as a lost gem from a young Mark E. Smith, the band hit a different beat within the arrangement.

I get something of the leftfield groove of the Longcut in the bassline, and the melody flirts with the pop-friendly indie of The Lathums, but if anything, I hear echoes of the joy-filled James, people playing music that they love. Dennis Beach want you to love Platino – and that won’t be a hard thing to do.
