New Music: Youth Valley – sunday oh monday

As the release date of Youth Valley’s As Passive Aggressive As It Gets LP approaches, they share a third track, sunday oh monday.

Many of us have had that unquantifiable and difficult-to-explain sense of dread as the weekend draws to a close, and normality beckons. Once, that led to a return to work, but in the modern age, it can easily mean having to confront a fractured and febrile existence. That dual fear and generalised anxiety powers this latest single from Athens-based Youth Valley, though they skirt around the cliches of political post-punk here.

Just as Sunday shifts to Monday, the arrangement moves wisp-like from shoegaze to the lighter ground of post-punk. It doesn’t seek to overwhelm the listener; it’s more that Youth Valley successfully strives to encapsulate that turmoil that comes colliding with an unavoidable, unwanted event.

States the band about the song, which will appeal to fans of Desperate Journalist and Drab Majesty, “The track explores the surreal state of an adult’s mind, numbed by the routine of struggle for survival – both physically and spiritually in a dystopic modern society.”
