New Music: IVES – Dahlia

Dahlias are often considered a symbol of strength, but when given to another person, they are regarded as a sign of commitment and devotion.

The latter is a major theme within the lyrics of Dahlia, the latest single from Los Angeles duo IVES. Comprising Chris and Ivory (Ives) Kellogg, IVES lay some intense emotions over a dream pop arrangement that is initially gossamer light.

A coded declaration of love with a request for reciprocation is expressed in the refrain ‘the dahlias say you′re mine,’ Ivory’s vocals lending the song a vulnerable and ethereal presence. I might be mistaken, but I’m certain that the lighter tones of the track drop away as it plays on. There’s no concrete sense of a resolution to the protagonist’s plea within the lyrics; the song fades out on a melancholy and grey note, making me wonder if that love is out of reach or unrequited. That may leave some feeling unsatisfied, for me, it adds a note of realism to this altogether dream-like number.
