New Music: Starcrusher – Space Police

The gathering second sleazon – I mean season – of electroclash is being joined by another rowdy child: an attitude-laden descendant of its distant cousins, New Rave.

Space Police isn’t a full-on resurrection of the mid-00s genre. If you have fond remembrances for the early days of Klaxons and Shitdisco, you’ll get where the latest single from Starcrusher is wants to take you, though it’s less Atlantis To Interzone and more I Know Kung Fu in terms of where it balances its take on indie and club cultures. It’s not really New Rave, nor does it pretend to be.

Montreal-based Starcrusher splice melody and movement within the track’s very DNA and fold some very futurepop arpeggios into the track. It has a grandeur and poise that symphonic and metal bands would die for, and a post-punk chill that’s too cool for Bauhaus school. Does that sound like a lot? Well, yes, it probably is, but you won’t care when you’re losing it on the dance floor or in a mass of bodies at a gig, feeling the noise.
