New Music: Cymbaline – Mean Bobby
Dark rockers Cymbaline hail from Utrecht in The Netherlands. While their primary musical influence is post-punk, they incorporate a wide range of sounds into their music, as you can hear on Mean Bobby, below.
The lead vocals have a dark, resonant quality that evokes the likes of Tom Smith of Editors, but also Lou Reed at his most laconic. Their emotional gravitas doesn’t just draw out the post-punk passion of the arrangement, but also adds a layer of humanity to the Krautrock elements of the song. A jangling lead guitar melody adds a frisson and fire in turn as if leading the listener by the hand through new and uncharted emotional territory.
The band has had to postpone their upcoming gigs, but be sure to keep an eye on their Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram pages for details on the rearranged dates. You can also listen to Mean Bobby on Spotify and YouTube.
