New Music: Date With Destiny – Set Me Free
The evocative voice of Date With Destiny’s Lisa Cuthbert might be familiar to you, but not in this particular, impassioned electro setting.
Cuthbert, known for her solo work as well as with ISON and having sung with The Sisters of Mercy, is obviously no stranger to the dark side of music. That’s borne out on Set Me Free, from the band’s new album, Rain of Despair.
A collaboration between two France-based artists, Irish singer Cuthbert and American musician Alex Clark, the song, as with the album itself, finds a particularly Francophone-facing place for itself.
Cuthbert has a folkish flavour to her vocals, but here, she finds a piercing shard of ice within her warm tones, as bandmate Clark whips up a sonic storm that has resonances of the KOMPROMAT and Minuit Machine: taut and transgressive, personal and political, but always with an ear for what will work on a dark scene dancefloor.

The heady mix of dark wave, EBM, and synthpop on Rain of Despair was mixed by Maurizio Baggio, who has worked with Boy Harsher, The Soft Moon, and Nuovo Testamento – a sure sign of the album’s quality and pitch-perfect production.
Rain of Despair was released on the 7th of January, and you can listen to the album on Bandcamp and Spotify. For all the latest news from Date With Destiny, head to Instagram and Facebook.
