Like Badalamenti taking an unexpected turn into a lush, cinematic take on Northern Soul, there’s a grounded grandeur to 33CHANTS from David August’s upcoming PIAS album, D’ANGELO.

Like Badalamenti taking an unexpected turn into a lush, cinematic take on Northern Soul, there’s a grounded grandeur to 33CHANTS from David August’s upcoming PIAS album, D’ANGELO.

With a tour timed to coincide with the release of the album and single (we’ll be at the Manchester gig for sure) 33CHANTS is a complete departure stylistically from his ambient DCXXXIX A.C album which was released back in March.

More upbeat than the previous release and with his vocals carrying a lot more of the emotional and tonal weight of 33CHANTS, it takes elements of 60s soundtracks, half-remembered stompers from cult music scenes and a light, dreamy touch that all combine to deliver up a sound that is engaging and catchy but still in keeping with the chilled, dream-state sound for which he’s known.

33CHANTS is out now and can be streamed or downloaded on all major digital outlets. D’ANGELO drops on October 5th and you can find out more about the release details – including CD and vinyl versions of the album – here.

August’s European tour starts October 28th in Leipzig and ending up in Amsterdam on December 5th, and will see him play dates France, Belgium, Scandinavia, the UK and Italy.
