New Music: Deathsport – Restless Legs Syndrome
Deathsport is an indie rock band from Germany fronted by brothers Tom and Mike Zitzelsberger. Their Case Study Songs EP was released late last month, and a real highlight is the cutting indie-pop of Restless Legs Syndrome.
A strange duality lies at the heart of the song; it’s full of movement as the guitar melody, the vocals and the percussion create a sense of urgency. But the offbeat lyrics and looping, hypnotic nature of the song overall sends it in a more chilled, abstract direction – fitting, given the subject of the piece. An intriguing listening experience, as is the whole EP.
The say about the track, “Restless Legs Syndrome is a song about insomnia. About not wanting to do anything but having to do everything. It is written during countless sleepless nights with nothing to do and a lot on our mind. Semisomnolent thoughts and worries are appearing in the verses, and it feels like a lot of the song is actually written while half asleep – like a real slacker indie song. This is the first song we wrote for the Case Study Song EP and there are quite a few versions now. We still don’t know which one we like best and are probably second guessing at the moment.”
