New Music: Dinosoul – Sorrows

Pittsburgh darkwave-inspired duo Dinosoul (Donny Donovan and Carolyn Hilliard) follow up September’s Let Me Go with a track that could almost be a companion piece – the starkly beautiful Sorrows.

You can hear resonances of bands like Throwing Muses and Chastity Belt in the mix; post-punk bass lines merging with melodic guitars and sparse, spiky percussion. It’s the perfect, melancholic framework for the lyrics to explore that sense of disconnection from reality, be it sleep or staring at our phones, that can seem more attractive than facing the world around us. Donovan’s vocals are the perfect vehicle for such reflections, their undercurrent of heartache adding more weight to the images created by the lyrics.

Singer and guitarist Donny Donovan said this about the track’s origins; “There were moments in my life where all I wanted to do was sleep. I didn’t want to wake up or see anyone. I was so comfortable with never waking up.” She continues, “My dreams were more exciting than my actual life. Being scared in my nightmares was better than being alone in my real life. I feel like it can be addictive.”
