New Music: Evangelism – Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon is one of those moments in music that leaves you wondering how the heck someone pulled off something so wild and unpredictable.

In that, it mirrors the work of the famous painter, as the lyrics provide an insight into his hedonistic and creative life. The song, from Evangelism’s new album, Tell Me Life’s Funny, is just as daring as the painter’s work, as it challenges your perceptions of what is allowed in post-punk.

As the vocals come across as if possessed by the spirit of one of Bacon’s Screaming Popes, the track powers its way from art rock to punk, and the guitars and violin draw on the hectic noise and confusion of cityscapes and unbridled creativity. It’s like Talking Heads and The Bad Seeds teamed up to turn your world upside down.
