New Music: Ginger Winn – Circling Squares

Circling Squares sees Ginger Winn bring indie-rock on some thought-provoking and counterintuitive musical diversions.

They are ones that nevertheless are always in tune with her understated but stunning vocal and emotive range. The mood is of a Lana Del Rey style drama, but Circling Squares isn’t a grand, magnolia-garlanded affair. The most immediate references are the cinematic rock of Cigarettes After Sex and the wistful embers of a Tex-Mex ballad dedicated to a lost love.

The song and lyrics come back on themselves, as if regret is stopping the song’s protagonist from moving on. But when memories and regret sound as good as this, maybe living in the past now and again isn’t such a bad thing?
