New Music: Groupie – Half Wave
With their debut LP, Ephemeral, due out later this year, Brooklyn duo Groupie (Ashley Kossakowski and Johanna Healy) channel the glammy, chaotic sounds of the 70s and beyond on Half Wave. You can listen to the track below.
A glorious and riotous amalgam of Patti Smith, Roxy Music, Velvet Underground, Bikini Kill, and The Raincoats inform this song. It’s rock, but with an archness to the vocals that would make Bryan Ferry green with envy. Classic punk and No Wave muscle their way into the arrangement and melody, like a street gang set to music, the song is gentle when it needs to be, but it’ll steamroller you down if you get in its way.
Ashley Kossakowski says she wanted to make light of the detritus of a bad relationship by writing a fun, danceable song with tongue-in-cheek commentary about unrealistic standards in dating and fleeting feelings of acceptance from a partner. She adds, “A guy that didn’t even know how to cook eggs cheated on me twice, so I wrote this surfy, poppy song as a reminder to have some standards while dating, and until I find someone worthwhile, just dance around.”
Half Wave can be streamed on Spotify and downloaded on Bandcamp. Be sure to check Groupie out on Facebook and Instagram for news about the band, the upcoming Ephemeral album, and more.
