New Music: Judy Blank – Toy Heart
Any song that namechecks Dragonball Z is certain to attract my attention, and when it’s as beautiful as Toy Heart, well, I’m hooked.
The song sees Judy Blank work elements of indie, folk, and pop into a musically light but emotionally revealing sad bop. It’s a love song, but it focuses on those moments where connections aren’t quite made, feelings don’t quite match. But you stay all the same because the differences are so small and the hope is much bigger.
If you like the domestic vignettes of Andrew Applepie and Phoebe Bridgers, then you’ll like Toy Heart and should keep your eyes peeled for Blank’s new album, Big Mood.

“I’m a very practical lover,” Blank says, talking about Toy Heart. “Like, if I let you borrow my beloved ’95 Jeep Cherokee, it means I trust you. That’s me crossing my fingers that a small gesture might shift the story. It never does. But in that moment, it feels like it could, which is sometimes enough for me to keep hanging around.”
Big Mood is set for release via Rounder Records on the 22nd of August. The album is now up for pre-order in digital and vinyl formats on Bandcamp. For pre-save options, make your way to Judy Blank’s Instagram and Facebook socials.
