New Music: Kat Five – Switch
Kat Five cites Kim Gordon and Peaches as inspirations, and that combination of leftfield pop aesthetics with a punk sensibility can be heard on Switch.
It’s a political song of sorts, but in the sense that the personal is political. Over a hook-laden, bass-heavy arrangement, Kat Five guides us through a series of easy steps that can help us take stock of where we are.
But she also shows us how to centre ourselves, make ourselves something new, something more engaged. And that’s an important message in these challenging times.

“Switch is a big tune about anxiety and feeling small, switching things up and down, and exploring to find your anxiety antidote,” says the singer and musician.
“It could be something mystical, or practical, maybe something in nature – ‘a breath or a feather or a tiny seed’. It’s a call to do things on your own terms, and is full of energy and ascending sounds to help you get there.”
You can listen to Switch on Bandcamp, Spotify, and YouTube Music. For all the latest news from Kat Five – and her other projects, including Feral Five – head to Facebook, Instagram, or BlueSky.
