New Music: Lukka – TomboI

New Yorkers Lukka have followed up their Fabric of the Cosmos single with the psych-leaning indie pop of TomboI.

While TomboI is as cosmic and reflective as that track, Lukka approach that sound from another perspective. The reimaging of 60s pop continues, given a technological sheen, with a focus on the personal, encouraging us to remember where we come from, even as we climb ever higher in life. That is given added impetus by the vocals once again channelling the unspoken influence of Trish Keenan and Lætitia Sadier, poised and full of emotion.

Says the band’s songwriter and band leader Franzi Szymkowiak about TomboI, “The song started with a guitar riff I actually came up with on the synth. It had this cool melody, so I just kept building around it, messing with chords, letting it loop, seeing where it wanted to go. The lyrics flew through me and kinda showed up out of nowhere. You know it’s one of those songs where you have to figure out what you meant after it’s already done.”

She continues, “I guess TomboI is about tapping into both your masculine and feminine sides—and actually loving that mix. I feel it’s also a self-celebration of my Gemini energy, leaning into that duality and just owning it.”

Catch up with Lukka on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok for all the latest band news. TomboI is out now, and along with Fabric of the Cosmos, it can be downloaded on Bandcamp and streamed on SoundCloud and Spotify.
