New Music: Matt Storm – words don’t describe

With a voice that can traverse soul and psych, Matt Storm has an equally confounding but moving sound to match on words don’t describe.

It shows an evolution from his 2022 album, Like an Old Tree in the City, with the pop and folk aspects in the arrangement shifting sideways, Storm’s vocals coming through as if from a 1950s blues joint.

The confidence of songs like We Went Our Own Ways is replaced by introspection and uncertainty, a slight falter in the vocals giving that an added presence, and the arrangement giving the listener a greater insight into the emotions within the lyrics.

Words can’t fully describe the subsurface experimental and vintage nature of the track, though, and therein lies a lot of its considerable charm. It’s a wonderful calling card for his new album, System Breaks.

Storm holds a release party for the LP on the 29th of May at The Wise Hall & Lounge in Vancouver. For details on that, head to Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. You can find pre-save options for System Breaks right here.
