New Music: Megan Timings – Dreaming Of You

Pop and chiptune have a lot of similarities, quite often being bright, a bit frenetic and focused more on fun than creating high art. But the fusion of the two can throw up some interesting and intelligent moments, such as Dreaming Of You by Megan Timings.

The song exists in a similar musical universe to Grimes; the mix of the gritty and the polished, but also the nexus of technology and emotion that is becoming ever more present in all our lives. However, it avoids the more lo-fi and at times abrasive undercurrents of 8-bit genres, softening the edges and creating a warmer and more inviting sound. Forging her own path, the vocals eschew the temptation to overuse production tricks, retaining their human core, which in turn reinforces the emotional message at the heart of the lyrics.

Timings had this to say about the track: “I wanted a super cutesy, dreamy vibe to the song and it was initially inspired by artists such as Anamanaguchi, Kero Kero Bonito and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, but it ended up developing this really popish sound and I found myself really inspired by Charli XCX when it came to mixing the vocals.”
